How it works

Your Moon sign without a birth time

Why does Signology show two Moon signs for my birthday?

The Moon changes sign every two to three days, so on more than 4 in 10 birthdays it was in two signs. Without a birth time, Signology shows both, and the full reading gives the time of the change so you can choose before or after.

How Signology works it out

  1. Signology computes where the Moon was with Astronomy Engine, in the tropical zodiac.
  2. Without a birth time, it reads your whole birth day, midnight to midnight, in your device's time zone or the birthplace zone you choose in the full reading.
  3. If the Moon changed sign that day, you see both signs. The full reading adds the clock time of the change and asks if you were born before or after it.
  4. The phase and how much of the Moon was lit are read at the middle of that window, midday for a whole day.

A worked example

On June 1, 1975, the Moon left Aquarius and entered Pisces at 01:32 UTC. Anyone born that day before that moment has the Moon in Aquarius, and anyone born after it has the Moon in Pisces.

Why another site may show something different

When the birth time is unknown, a common convention is to use noon. On a change day that gives one sign, which matches the sky for only part of the day.

The time zone matters too, because the same date covers different hours in New York and Tokyo. If you were born far from where you are now, choose your birthplace's time zone in the full reading.

Check it yourself

Open JPL Horizons, choose the Moon, keep the observer Geocentric, pick observer ecliptic longitude (quantity 31) and list your birth day in 10-minute steps. Each sign spans 30 degrees, from Aries at 0 to Pisces at 330. Signology's own tests find its positions within 0.002 degrees of Horizons.

What tradition links with it

Astrologers associate the Moon with what you need: comfort, rest and feeling at home. Its sign is read as your emotional weather, and the phase at birth as a rhythm, from quiet beginnings at the New Moon to clear sight at the Full Moon. One small step this week: notice what actually settles you after a long day, and write it down.
